Doorly

10 Questions: Doorly

Doorly is a LA based House producer and DJ who has had major releases on Cajual, Dirtybird, Moonharbour, and Hot Creations. Over the past couple of years he has built an impressive resume of hits and has been touring all around the world.

In June, Doorly is playing at Crotia’s 7th annual Hideout festival (June 26 – 30) along with 150 of the worlds best Electronic artists. We browsed through the lineup and we can assure you it’s filled with some incredible DJ’s and artists (Dusky, Jamie Jones, Patrick Topping, etc)

This week we had an opportunity to chat with Doorly and ask him 10 questions on his music, his influences, and his perspective on Dance music in general . Here’s what they had to say:

How has your music evolved over the last 10 years?

As a DJ I started with house music but pretty soon after fell in love with playing hip hop because of the turntablism aspect and how challenging and fun it was to put it together well. Because of that I naturally evolved into a bit of a block party DJ and started including all Genres in a bit of a mash up style. Then I realised that I was being a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none and confusing the hell out of my fans so I decided to just focus on what I enjoyed the most which was house music. These days I float between disco and house music.

What artists had the biggest influence on you?

Initially it was Fatboy Slim and Erick Morillo that made me want to be a DJ, then the Scratch perverts, Craze & Q Bert made me want to do turntablism. 2manyDJs blew my head off and made me want to start mixing all genres. These days I’m inspired most by people like KiNK who play a hybrid live / DJ Set.

Favourite DJ to play alongside?

Artwork is the most fun human being on earth and so much fun to play with, Also Skream and Soul Clap.

Favourite way to discover new music?

Nothing beats the feeling of hearing a great DJ play a record and that panic trying to find out what it is! That’s always the best way to find a record. Sitting on your laptop for 6 hours listening to promos and finding one track that’s playable sucks!

What are your thoughts and opinions on the current state/ future of the House genre?

It’s stronger than ever, it’s a little scary just how popular it’s getting and somewhat dumbed down at times as it sometimes makes it hard playing after young DJs who just smash it out but in general it’s great for all of us involved how hype things are right now.

You’re flying out to Hideout again this year, is there anything in particular you love about the festival?

It’s my favourite festival in Europe, I’ve played every single year: I think this will be my 8th year if I’m right. It’s just such an amazing location and line up. Its right on the ocean and its the most magical experience playing as the sun comes up there!

What do you think on the whole shift in the way we consume music in the present? (Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud, Blogs, etc)

It’s all great for everyone involved as it gets the artists paid properly and it exposes out music to a much wider audience and makes us much easier to discover outside of just DJs.

Based off of Resident Advisor it says you currently reside in LA. What is the House culture like in LA? How has it changed over the past 10 years?

I’m based between L.A and Ibiza. The house culture in L.A is still relatively niche for such a big city in comparison to European cities like London, Berlin etc but it’s a really nice vibe for sure. What really hurts it is the shitty alcohol licensing laws that mean you cant buy a drink after 2am. It definitely makes it harder to throw underground parties there with that getting in the way. America in General has been fascinating to watch over the last 10 years for sure.

I first went there when I was playing more bass music and at that point it was too early as it was only hip hop, country and rock music in the clubs generally but then dubstep exploded and EDM at the same time. All of a sudden you had all these kids obsessed with Dance music and it took over the nation for the first time. What has been really interesting is watching the whole nation grow up and start to look for something deeper. Thanks to artists like Disclosure and labels like Dirtybird and Hot Creations they have managed to educated the kids and bring them to house music and now acts like Green Velvet are the Headliners which is amazing to see and so well deserved.

What kind of equipment do you use in your production? Favourite synths, VST’s, plugins?

I love my new Pioneer Toraiz for jamming out ideas, its like a hybrid of a Roland tr-8 and an MPC and anything I create I can store and play out live with from the box. Also I’ve just bought Machine Jam which is a really nice workflow tool and is really changing my game. Software-wise I use Abelton, and Sub boom Bass, Hive and Diva are favourite VSTs.

What are your favourite tracks at the moment?

I just signed this track from Jaydee (famous for ‘Plastic Dreams’ back in the day) called ‘Back Into Acid’ for my label Reptile Dysfunction and it’s a monster. It’s going to do some big damage this summer I can’t wait to release it!

Favourite city/town to visit and play a show?

Melbourne in Australia. In particular there’s a spot called Revolver! If you haven’t been then you need to and if you have then you know why!

If your near Croatia at the end of June we would highly recommend going to the Hideout festival to catch Doorly throw down one of his masterful sets.
