NVOY are a London UK based duo (Conner & James) who produce Electronic music in the styles of House, UK bass, and R&B. If unfamiliar with the duo’s music, we would suggest starting at their first big hit ‘You Are’ below.
This week we had an opportunity to chat with NVOY and ask them 10 questions on their music, their influences, and their perspective on various topics . Here’s what they had to say:
How has Brexit had an impact on the music scene in England/ Europe at Large?
It’s made us realize that lots of people are a bit scared and racist haha, but musically it hasn’t had any effect and to be completely honest it won’t affect us personally that much. We will still spend a lot of time in mainland Europe whatever happens.
Where do you see yourselves going in the next little while? What can we expect to see from NVOY in the coming months?
The first two tracks from our ‘Aurum EP’ are out now, and the full EP is out at the end of January. This is the first time we’ve ever released a collection of work rather than singles, and we’re so excited about it. It’s got house tempo stuff, it’s got futuristic 140 stuff, it’s got RnB influenced stuff – it’s all the music that we love and want to play out in our DJ sets.
We’re throwing ‘NVOY & Friends’ parties all over the UK as well, curating lineups of mates and other producers we love and then live streaming on facebook. Putting on parties in fan’s houses is hilarious; we’ve met some really cool people and drank a lot of stella.
If you could work with any Artist who would it be? (deceased artist’s included)
James – I would love to work with Skrillex. His production and mixing is incredible and he has so much energy it would be inspiring.
Conner – I’d love to work with Benga, his earliest tracks are really what inspired me to get into electronic music. So much bounce – they just have a unique kind of energy I love.
It’s Sunday night in December, what album do you throw on?
Any of D’Angelo’s albums. Say no more
What do you think of the whole shift in the way we consume music now? (Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud, Blogs, etc…)
The whole shift to streaming is interesting. It fits into a wider shift to a rental-based economy which has much bigger implications than just music. It’s all great as long as you have decent internet everywhere you go. The only bad thing is being so reliant on your internet connection haha.
What’s your favourite movie soundtrack?
Thoughts and opinion on the current state/future of the House genre?
We wouldn’t say that we just make house music. The house scene in the UK has gone to techno, or to bass house. There is tropical/melodic/deep house as well but that’s not as culturally relevant as techno and bass. We like music at a house tempo but at the moment it feels so much more exciting and so much more true to ourselves to make music at 130 or 140bpm, taking influence from dubstep, trap, and future bass. Techno is great but fuck sitting in a studio all day making it, we like SHINY SOUNDS and we wanna make big melodic music, that’s what we do.
What is the music culture like London, England? How has it changed over the past couple of years?
All our venues are being shut down! I think it’s partially down to the fact that we have a culture of abusing drugs and alcohol in the UK, more so than countries like Germany or the Netherlands. People in the UK tend to binge drink and take things too far, and cause trouble. People in other European countries are cooler and more in control, so they’re allowed to have nice things like 24hr licenses and open fires in the smoking areas. – James
What kind of equipment do you use in your production? Favourite VST, synth, or plugins?
We’ve been using Logic for years so that’s our home. We don’t use much hardware because we really like being able to produce music on trains/planes or in cafes wherever we are. We’ve spent years collecting samples and building our own drum instruments, and in terms of synthesis we use Logic’s ES2 a LOT, and have been using Serum for a few things recently. Overall we keep it fairly simple and just spend a lot of time mixing and programming.
When we visit London, which club/venue do we have to go to?
You’d have to come to Moth Club, Hackney, on the 27th January! We’re throwing a launch party for our ‘Aurum EP’, with special guests, friends, and family. We’re gonna be running around the place causing trouble and throwing glitter on everything.
