Seattle MC Dave B is a multi-talented hip-hop artist who raps, sings, writes and produces while bringing to the table lyrical content reflective of the golden age of hip-hop. Dave B originally blends elements of hip-hop, R&B, jazz and funk over conscious-driven lyrics using soulful melodies and harmonies.
In 2016, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis invited Dave B to open for their tour on the Northwest dates. This year, will mark Dave B’s first very own headlining run, with shows in Toronto (April 2nd!), NY, Chicago, LA, London, Denver and more.
This week we had an opportunity to chat with Dave B and ask him 10 questions on his music, his career, and his perspective on the Hip Hop genre. Here’s what they had to say:
Who is a beat producer that you admire and haven’t had the opportunity to work with yet?
Sango produced the entirety of your ‘Tomorrow’ album, how was his work ethic? Was he slow and meticulous, or was he fast and efficient?
Dave B: He’s very diligent and easy to work with, he’s really patient and trusts his ear so it made it easy for me to trust it too
How did you and Sango hook up to produce the ‘Tomorrow‘ project?
What have been some major milestones in your music career thus far?
Who are your biggest influences musically?
What do you think of the whole shift in the way we consume music now? (Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud, Blogs, etc…)
Dave B: I like it, I think its refreshing how easy it is to access music however the novelty of owning a physical copy is gone. There was some thing about being able to go out and grab the record that made me appreciate it more
Thoughts and opinion on the current state/future of the Hip Hop/Rap genre?
Dave B: I’m not sure if theres any “pure” rap/hip hop anymore, theres a lot of mixing of genres within hip hop and I love it
What is the music culture like in Seattle? Is it very tight knit (everyone knows everyone) or are there a bunch of different cliques.
Dave B: There’s for a sure a mix of both, I feel like all the artists in Seattle as far as hip hop goes know of each other because the city isn’t that big but having cliques is kind of inevitable. Seattle has a lot of great talent though I’m excited to see what happens
Who are you currently listening to and who are some up and coming artists from Seattle that we should watch out for?
Dave B: Right now just a lot of feel good soulful records, I just turned this new Rick Ross album though its pretty fly. Some of my favorites from Seattle would have to be Romaro Franceswa, Nyles Davis, Key Nyata, Travis Thompson, Shawn Parker, the list goes on I can’t wait for the rest of the world to tap in to whats going on here
What can we expect to hear from you in the future? Any future collaborations or albums on the way?
Dave B will be performing in Toronto on April.2nd at the Velvet Underground. Be sure to catch him if you are in the city and are a fan of his music. Event and ticket information below!
