Time Festival

Time Festival: Past and the Present

Another year another stellar Time Festival lineup. Compared to last year’s lineup, this year seems to have more of a Hip Hop/ Electronic focus. Most people will recognize names such as Run the Jewels, Joey Bada$$, and Kehlani, however we are confident the best performances will come from one of the House artists (Kink, Jacques Greene, Jonas Rathsman). Last year we saw Kink live at Movement Detroit and he absolutely smashed it. He is one of those DJ’s that really knows how to cater and interact with the crowd. We are also very excited to see Jacques Greene, especially since we just picked up the wax copy of his On Your Side EP last week and we have been rinsing it nonstop.  All in all this year’s lineup is very balanced and we are sure it’s going to meet expectations.

Time Festival is a special event for us because it was one of the first Electronic concerts/festivals we ever went to. Back in 2009, Electro was just starting to come into its own and as you can see below, the lineup was stacked with artists that now headline festivals around the world. We were just getting out of high school and at the time me and the other guys at HOL were just starting to become seriously obsessed with the emerging Electro/Electronic scene. As soon as we set foot in Sound Academy and felt the kick drums hitting our chest we instantly became hooked with going to Electronic/House events.

The following event posters are from Time Festivals from 2008, 2009, and 2010 (we apologize for the pixelation it was all we could find on the web). Based on our memory and our experiences, these lineup posters provide a truthful depiction of the Electronic/ Electro scene in Toronto and around North America during the end of the 2000’s. Taking a closer look at these posters, what is particularly interesting is the subtle but significant change in the lineup selection from 2009 (Crystal Castles, A-Trak) to 2010 (Diplo, Skream, Benga). 2010 was the year that Dubstep really started to emerge from the underground, and it was also the same year in which Skrillex became Dubstep’s poster boy. It’s obvious from these posters that Embrace/ Time Festival were cognizant of these changes and adjusted their line up accordingly in order to stay current.

Fast foward six years and Embrace and Time Festival are still thriving and plugged into progressive music. Unlike declining festivals such as Digital Dreams and Veld, Time Festival is still relevant and has been able to adapt and change to the times.

Below we have posted some of our favourite tracks from some of the artists that are performing at this year’s Time. Have a listen below and make sure to RSVP to the Facebook event.
