Electric Island Review – July 1st 2016

Electric Island – Canada Day Edition

Many of us were out of the city this past long weekend but we had our boy KTP (Baptiste) check out Electric Island this Canada day, Heres what he had to say:

We’ve done a lot of festivals before but this was our first time on the island, our first festival in Toronto, our first Canada Day, and the first time we saw Ben Klock & Marcel Dettman play a b2b. A lot of firsts.

The weather was weird on Friday, there was a big thunderstorm and a lot of rain but half an hour later, the sun came back and we knew that it would be a great day on the Island!

When we got to the island we impressed by the general organization of the operation. No wait to have the media access, everybody was cool and in less than 5 minutes we were in the festival.

It was 4pm and Honey Dijon from Chicago was on stage playing some house. There was not a lot of people but already a good dance floor despite the puddles on the grass. The weather was beautiful and she was playing just what the audience was waiting for, like this track:

HCCR – Son of Mong.

At 5pm, the french duo Apollonia from Paris went on stage and delivered good techno from the beginning of their set, some trippy vocals here and there but the show was so good. The crowd started to build and things started to get a little crazy. It was a techno heavy set but this one was one of my favourite,

Bassa Clan – The Albert Theme.

Then it was Tales of Us to go on stage, it’s my biggest surprise of this edition of Electric Island. If you love techno, their live was just amazing, for 2 straight hours everybody was dancing in front of them. It was really a must see of this Electric Island. We met a couple Italians who agree with us about this show (hello Giorgio).

Last but not least, at 9pm the two friends Marcel & Ben, came on and played big techno tracks for a solid 2 hour set. They were also playing an after at Coda a few hours later. Ben Klock and Marcel Dettman are two world class DJ’s, I’m sure that after this show a lot more people agree with me.

It was time to go back downtown with the ferry, it was long but when the ship arrived at BayStreet, we caught the fireworks for the Canada Day. After a full day on the islands, it was an appropriate way of finishing off our introduction to this festival series.
