Back in 2012, some friends and I wandered around the recently abandoned Ontario Place grounds and thought how sick it would be if a party was thrown there.

Well this Labour Day weekend for the very first time, Electric Island will be hosting their 2019 season finale on Ontario Place’s West Island. This exciting new development will bring a whole different vibe to the festival, hopefully in a positive way. It’ll have more infrastructure, better logistics and dynamic stage production. You’ll now be able to walk in and out of the fest rather than deal with the ferry and it’s finally in the West end where Toronto’s electronic scene is largely based. BIG UPGRADE.

Before…

Music-wise, I’ve been impressed with the individual lineups in 2019 and the closer weekend is no different. German techno extraordinaires headline the Saturday lineup. Boris Brejcha has such a particular sound that he decided that he decided to create his own genre: “hightech minimal”. Chris Liebing is more on the traditional techno side of things with a touch of deep. I’m also interested to see Adriatique, two Swiss dudes both named Adrian that have a Tale of Us vibe to them.

Sunday’s lineup is arguably better with Electric Island regular Claude VonStroke, Joris Voorn and Pleasurekraft. Claude VonStroke absolutely shut it down at 2018’s finale and we have no doubts he’ll do it again in 2019. We saw Joris Voorn in Montreal a few Igloofests back and he was my favourite set of the weekend. He mixed in everything from deep house to traditional EI style techno to a couple OG Daft Punk jams. Although I expect all acts to bring the heat, I have particularly high expectations of Joris because of that one brisk night in MTL.
